Dr. Amber Learn earned a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant International University, San Diego. Dr. Learn (PSY 25444) currently works in private practice as a Clinical Psychologist serving patients throughout Texas and California. She works with teens (14yrs. – 18+ yrs.), adults, and families to overcome challenges and assist with major life transitions. Her work focuses on several issues including: anger management, anxiety, depression, fear/phobias, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder (I & II), divorce recovery, impulse control disorders, ADHD, trichotillomania, dermatillomania, defiant behaviors, difficult life transitions, relationship troubles, postpartum adjustment, parent-child issues, and academic underachievement. She often works from a cognitive-behavioral, trauma focus (EMDR) and family systems orientation.
Throughout her career, Dr. Learn has served as a Behavioral Coach with New Haven Youth and Family Services working with adolescents and their caretakers in residential treatment centers and private homes to help manage high-risk behaviors. At Springall Academy, a public school for special needs children, Dr. Learn provided individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and crisis intervention to children and adolescents with mood disorders, learning disabilities, and behavior problems. She has also worked at Harmonium, Inc., a non-profit community clinic, where she provided short and long-term psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, and families to overcome struggles and minimize problem behaviors. At Harmonium, she led parenting groups focusing on issues that parents struggle with while raising teenagers. She also led anger management, anti-theft, and substance abuse groups.
Dr. Learn has worked at the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office, serving as an advocate for victims and witnesses of violent crime. She has also worked at the UCSD Medical Center providing short-term therapy to individuals and groups on the inpatient psychiatric unit. In the UCSD Clinical Trials department, she conducted pharmaceutical research with populations diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Bipolar I Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Attention Deficient disorders.
Dr. Learn completed her post-doctoral training at California State University, San Marcos. She worked with a diverse student population to overcome issues affecting their academic success. Prevalent issues included depression, anxiety, anger management, relationship conflict, disordered eating, bipolar disorder, life transitions, identity issues, impulse control disorders, and academic struggles. She led several presentations educating students on leadership issues, communication styles, and stress management. She also led in-service trainings on various Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) including trichotillomania and dermatillomania.
Dr. Learn is a professional member of The TLC Foundation for Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors and graduate of the Foundation’s training academy. Dr. Learn was part of the presentation team at the 2019 TLC Foundation's national conference in Virginia where she led a workshop on the link between self-soothing and the brain. The TLC Foundation provides comprehensive research, advocacy, education and treatment resources to people affected by Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (chronic skin picking, chronic hair pulling, and chronic nail biting). Dr. Learn stays up-to-date on the latest evidence-based research and treatment methods to help patients effectively treat hair pulling, skin picking, and related behaviors. Dr. Learn offers video consultations to patients who need access to a provider in this specialized treatment area. She can meet via secure video for 3-4 consultation sessions to complete a functional assessment of the disorder and provide treatment recommendations to your local provider.
Dr. Learn has been trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy by the EMDR Professional Training organization. The EMDR Professional Training organization is an approved provider through the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA). She is a professional member of the EMDR International Association. Dr. Learn completed her undergraduate and graduate training in California. She now lives with her husband and two children in Wylie, Texas.
